The power of critique
Been a while since I stopped putting up my photos for critiques in different photo sites with a purpose to learn. Now I only do it occasionally when I have shot something that I really like (happens very rarely). Why? Because you can’t learn from those critiques… It is funny how people who only shoot flowers, wisely suggest better ways to photograph fine-art nudes, people with a couple of family photos criticize your product shots etc. Well, I’ll tel you - don’t bother.
First - there’s no such thing as objective critique. It is always the matter of taste.
Second - if you want expert opinion, send the photos to a magazine or look up a photographer whose photos are of the same genre (you should preferably like them, too) and try to ask for his/her comments.
Third - as long as it is your hobby, you are the only one who has to like your photos (well, ok, your kids and wife, too). In case you are professional - let’s add your clients.
Anyway, I sometimes take a look inside those photo-sites. With one reason - to say something good about a shot or two. In the end, it doesn’t cost me anything, but it can make someone’s day.
